No end in sight for cash payments, Canadian research finds

Research published by the Bank of Canada has found demand for cash is still strong among users, particularly merchants and young people.

Author Geoffrey Dunbar, of the central bank's currency department, examines how the demand for cash shifts on Good Friday in Canada, when cash centres are closed for the long weekend.

In the working paper Demographics and the Demand for Currency he shows demand for cash is driven most by the 15-24 age group and merchants.

By contrast, as demographics shift in
