Cross-border claims shifting in favour of non-banks

International banking activity declined slightly in the third quarter of 2016, though statistics show there has been a shift in activity from the bank to non-bank sectors.

The Bank for International Settlements' international banking statistics, published on January 23, show cross-border claims were "little changed" in Q3, though they fell $65 billion to $28.2 trillion overall.

A drop in interbank activity was the main factor behind the decline, the BIS says, while claims on non-banks "continued
