SBP annual report highlights year of ‘critical’ changes

Reforms to central bank act tabled in parliament

The State Bank of Pakistan's (SBP) directors have put forward "critical" amendments to the country's central bank act that should see the CBP become more independent, governor Ashraf Mahmood Wathra said in the introduction to the SBP's Annual Performance Review.

The proposals are being considered by the Pakistani parliament, and include adding external members to the board, creating a deposit insurance facility, and allowing the central bank to hold property as part of Shariah-compliant
