US Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has made a strong public attack on current US Federal Reserve chair Janet Yellen, questioning her neutrality and competence, and calling for higher US policy rates.

Trump said Yellen was keeping interest rates "artificially low to get Obama retired", adding that "she should be ashamed of herself", in an interview with US television channel CNBC on September 12.
