331,000 counterfeit notes withdrawn in H1 2016 – ECB
Figures show 80% of all the counterfeits were €20 and €50 notes
A total of 331,000 counterfeit euro banknotes were withdrawn from circulation in the first half of 2016 – the lowest total in a six-month period since the first half of 2014 – the European Central Bank (ECB) announced on July 22.
The ECB stressed the number of counterfeits "remains very low in comparison with the increasing number of genuine banknotes in circulation". It noted there were "over 18.5 billion" circulating during the period.
