Ilan Goldfajn chosen to succeed Tombini as Brazilian governor

Former deputy picked to lead central bank at a time of economic contraction and high inflation

Ilan Goldfajn, chief economist at Itau Unibanco Holding SA, was chosen to succeed Alexandre Tombini as the Central Bank of Brazil governor today (May 17), by new finance minister Henrique Meirelles.

Meirelles took office this week after Michael Temer stepped in as interim president following Dilma Rousseff's impeachment. It was widely assumed that Goldfajn would be nominated as the new governor.
