Giorgi Kadagidze, governor of the National Bank of Georgia (NBG), yesterday announced the winner of a competition to design a symbol for the national currency, the lari, but insisted it had a limited lifespan as the country will one day "definitely" join the European Union and single currency.

The competition to design a new symbol was launched at the back end of last year, with a commission in February choosing a shortlist of five designs, which the Georgian public was then invited to vote on.
