Digital currencies such as Bitcoin could well represent the future for money – but they would still most likely be issued by central banks, according to a new paper co-authored by Bank of England chief economist Andrew Haldane, and Jan Qvigstad, executive director at Norges Bank.

The comments on Bitcoin make up just one page of a wide-ranging overview of the evolution of central banking since its inception, and reflect a relatively relaxed view of the disruptive potential of virtual currencies
