Bank of Portugal suspends staff holiday pay

The Bank of Portugal's board of directors has suspended the holiday pay for the central bank's employees.

The measures were taken to ensure the central bank did not "decouple" itself from the austerity measures the Portuguese general population is facing, according to a Bank of Portugal statement on January 4.

The board will also introduce "extraordinary measures for situations of particular financial vulnerability", a kind of safety net for the central bank's lowest-paid staff.
