Ukraine President in bid to strengthen central bank independence

Viktor Yanukovych, Ukraine's President, on Tuesday proposed strengthening the law governing the country's central bank to better protect its independence, and to entice IMF and World Bank support.

Bloomberg, a newswire, reported that the law would include clauses that extend the governor's term from five to seven years in order to avoid syncing appointments with the Ukrainian electoral cycle. The governor, deputy governors and members of the National Bank of Ukraine's board must also relinquish
