Brief History

Founded on 19 June 1934, as Banco Central de Reserva de El Salvador, it commenced operations in July 1934. On 20 April 1961, it became a state owned entity of public character, undergoing a reorganisation and modifying its original functions. On 1 January 2001, Monetary Integration Law established the US dollar as legal tender, alongside the Salvadoran colon. Since that date, notes and coins have been denominated in dollars.
