Bulgarian National Bank
Established in 1879 and reorganised in 1885, 1906 and 1928. In 1947 it absorbed all semi-state and private banks and became the national credit institution under the control of the state and with the right to issue banknotes. On 1 April 1964 the foreign department was taken over by the newly formed Bulgarian Foreign Trade Bank. In May 1989 the Central Bank of Bulgaria was established.
